Liver & Biliary Tree

Gastrointestinal · Anatomy

The liver makes bile; the gallbladder stores it; ducts deliver it to the duodenum.

Liver & Biliary Tree anatomy diagram
The structures
  1. Liver lobesMetabolism, clotting factors, drug clearance, bile production
  2. Portal veinNutrient-rich blood from the gut — first pass
  3. Hepatic ductsBile out of the liver
  4. GallbladderStores and concentrates bile; contracts after fatty meals
  5. Cystic ductGallbladder's driveway — stones stick here
  6. Common bile ductFinal path to the duodenum; blockage = jaundice + pale stool
  7. Sphincter of OddiGatekeeper at the duodenum
Why it matters on shift
  • Liver failure = bleeding risk: clotting factors are made here — check INR before that procedure
  • RUQ pain after fatty food radiating to the right shoulder = classic biliary colic
  • Most drug dosing assumes a working liver — cirrhosis changes everything from acetaminophen limits to sedation
