Same triggers as hemoglobin — the two travel together. Escalate the pair, not one alone.

What you do
  • Rule of thumb: Hct ≈ 3 × Hgb — a mismatch suggests lab error or acute change
  • Interpret with volume status: a dehydrated bleeder can look 'normal'
